WGA Screenplay Noms

You guys have probably heard that the WGA Script Noms were released, and as if you needed yet another reason to know that “Nobody knows anything,” as William Goldman said, just take a look at that list. Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Burn After Reading? These are the best original scripts of 2008? Are you kidding me?

The list below includes links to the scripts available for download.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Burn After Reading, written by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen
Milk, written by Dustin Lance Black
Vicky Cristina Barcelona, written by Woody Allen
The Visitor, written by Tom McCarthy
The Wrestler, written by Robert Siegel

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Screenplay by Eric Roth; Screen Story by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord; Based on the Short Story by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Dark Knight, Screenplay by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan; Story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer; Based on Characters Appearing in Comic Books Published by DC Comics; Batman Created by Bob Kane
Doubt, Screenplay by John Patrick Shanley, Based on his Play
Frost/Nixon, Screenplay by Peter Morgan, Based on his Play
Slumdog Millionaire, Screenplay by Simon Beaufoy, Based on the Novel "Q and A" by Vikas Swarup

It should also be noted, as Variety did, “Among the omissions from the WGA kudos are a handful of pics with traction in other awards-season contests, including Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married, The Reader, Gran Torino and Happy Go Lucky. Animated pics such as Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda are ineligible for WGA laurels because they were not penned under WGA contracts.”

Will blog about all these scripts in the near future.

I will note that all the nominated movies except "Vicky Christina Barcelona" were sent to WGA Members as screeners.

As a WGA member, I personally received 12 movie screeners this season (so far). I've heard others received one more that I didn't get, though.

So, what? Seventy percent of the movies WGA members received as screeners were nominated for WGA awards?

In that case, what scripts should have been nominated, MM? I would like to hear your opinion.

oh, nevermind - it's there, I overlooked it 'cause of the formatting... though the inclusion of Burn After Reading and Vicky Cristina do surprise me

Burn After Reading was brilliantly written...just not as good as, say, Slumdog Millionaire.

I don't think anyone takes these awards seriously anymore.

I hope Doubt wins. If The Dark Knight takes it the fanboys will drive me insane.

Oh wait. Slumdog Millionaire IS nominated! Woohoo! Go SM!

ryan - What can I say? I like to bitch about the WGA. Hehehe...

Pearl - Exactly.

Pretty Deaf Girl - I haven't decided yet, although I can tell you I would've never considered "Vicky Cristina" or "Burn After Reading."

Laura - Hi! Hope you're well.

Crumbs - I liked "Doubt," but I gotta say, some of those scenes and details like the weather were too overplayed. It's good but I don't believe it's worthy of great accolades.

-MM
