The Trinket-Maker

Hey guys,

I'm in the mood to do something radically different this week to jazz up my own creative juices (and hopefully yours, too). I'm going to post a collection of sensational short films (some Oscar-nominated, others personal favorites).

I'd like start with a favorite, The Trinket-Maker, directed by Paul Daley and winner of the 2003 "Best Short Film" in the Aspens Shortsfest.

This is the story of Wendell whose "home in the clouds is unusual and beautiful, as are the fascinating objects he creates, but his is a lonely existence. When a chance encounter seems to offer him an earthier alternative, Wendell is faced with a dilemma. Should he dare put his feet on the ground?"

Clicking "play film" will take you to the AtomFilms website, but this 8-minute short is worth your time if you can spare it.

Very nice.

You should check out the festival nominees at TS. Some very high quality stuff there.

This is my fave that didn't make the cut. A "Spike and Mike"-type classic!

Hehehe... That was pretty funny. I hadn't seen that one. William Garratt's website,

also looks really entertaining. Thanks for that.

Not only has your Mystery Man viewed all of the Top Ten Finalists of the TriggerStreet 3rd Annual Online Short Film Festival, but he has voted on a winner. That was a lot of fun.

I'll blog about it when it's over, I think. There were some really good films, and (to me at least) one very clear winner.

I'd like to say, too, that I think the Trinket-Maker is a nice allusion to the love life for the contemporary artist.

Here you have Wendell whose head is up in the clouds and he occasionally has to come down to earth to find inspiration (and materials). And then he finds love and it's very special how she finds a way to connect with him.

But he has to come down to earth to really experience love in its full beauty.

That's great.

That was very sweet and poignant. And I think your analysis is right on, MM.

I can hardly wait for the discussion on the TS 3d Film Festival.

What ever happened to this? It's so hard to find now and I want to share it with everyone!
